Round unfinished steel barrel with bayonet lug on top near muzzle. Breech stamped "P / (Eagles Head) / V R 20" on top. Tang dated 1832. Flat percussion conversion lockplate stamped in center with an eagle over "U.S." and rounded tail stamped "SPRING / FIELD / 1832". This is a Belgian cone-in-barrel method, which consisted of screwing the cone into the barrel above the original now-plugged touch hole. Barrels is retained by three steel barrel bands. Largest band at muzzle has small brass sight on top. Standard steel Model 1816 furniture, trigger guard marked "PT", sideplate stamped "S" and buttplate stamped "U.S.". Full length plain walnut stock stamped with two deeply struck inspector's cartouches on left side behind sideplate. Stamped with "EG" and "JO", and stock stamped with large "20" in front of buttplate tang. Complete with original steel ramrod and correct period black leather sling. This is one of the most well-marked specimens known. Excellent condition; all steel components retain a light grey patina with sharp edges and some minor spotting. Stock is excellent with a few minor storage marks. This musket has seen little or no use.
