DAVY’S CELEBRATED AMERICAN HUNTING KNIFE; four decorative ‘ciphers’ stamped on face of blade: “Alabama” “Hunting Knife” and two more that are only partially legible. Two piece striped horn scales with escutcheon on obverse, held by ‘birdseye’ pins; decorative nickel silver crossguards and coffin-shaped horse-alligator pommels. Blade with 50% original polish, but pitted in the area that remains exposed when the knife is closed. Grip scales probably replaced. Ex. Norm Flayderman, Mike Worley collections. First listed in Sheffield directories as a “pocket knife maker” in 1833, the business was restyled A. Davy & Sons in 1856.
