Circa 1840-1860’s. 5-3/8” long double edged dagger blade, 5/8”wide x 5/16” thick, marked “GEORGE/WOSTENHOLM’S/CELEBRATED/I*XL CUTLERY”. One piece ivory handle secured by single steel pin which is typical of Wostenholm; oval nickel silver crossguard. Original morocco leather sheath with I-XL trademark impressed in gold, nickel silver tip and throat. Blade in superb condition with most of original crocus polish, only light scratching. Handle with one crack at pin on reverse side. Ex. David Lennon collection. One of the most prolific makers of 19th century English Bowie knives, George Wostenholm and Sons and their famous I*XL trademark were sufficiently well known to be seen in 19th century cartoons depicting Bowie knives
