Douglas A. Bangert was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions during World War II. It was presented for extraordinary achievement while piloting one of four torpedo planes on November 19, 1942. Twice in the same morning, he attacked an enemy ship of the KONGO class, the battle ship was escorted by six destroyers and a large group of fighter planes. Captain Bangert's efforts accounted for three direct hits on the enemy battle ships which aided in destroying a capitol ship of the enemy navel forces. Bangert flew the first American Guadalcanal. He fought in Guadalcanal, Okinawa, Korea and Vietnam. He retired after 30 years in the Marines as a Colonel. This lot includes his U.S. Marine Corp hat, with sterling hat pin and embroidered brim, has some scattered areas of staining. Also included are his coat and embroidered trousers, including two officer's EGAs and his Distinguished Flying Cross with its original box, and a pair of white gloves with some yellow staining. Uniform is in excellent condition, with some minor fading on shoulders, some patination on gold embroidering on sleeves and trousers. Complete with several clippings of information of Douglas A. Bangert and a copied photograph. This is a fine grouping belonging to a hero of World War II.
