This trade musket dates to the first half of the 19th century. Three stage smoothbore steel barrel with British proofs and "24" stamped on left side of breech. Flat flintlock lockplate with rounded tail section, stamped with eagle and "US" in center and tail stamped "HARPER'S/FERRY/1834" vertically on tail. Brass furniture includes the classic serpent sideplate and brass buttplate, iron triggerguard with over-sized bow and large trigger. Full length walnut stock of familiar form with relief carved tear drop around barrel tang and panels around lock and sideplate. Wooden ramrod is missing about four inches. Barrel has a heavy brown patina with some freckling and corrosion at breech. Lock has been reconverted to flintlock configuration and lockplate has some pitting and a grey patina. Brass is unpolished and dark. Stock has a chip at toe and some scattered marks from use. This is a very desirable trade musket with an unusual and interesting lock!
