This was the first high power small bore rifle ever used by the military. Approximately 15,000 were sold to the United States Navy. This rifle has become favorite to collectors due to the fact that it was the model that was on board the battleship Maine when it was sunk during the Spanish American War. It is a magazine fed, bolt action, U.S. Navy marked and inspected rifle with typical military profile and parts to include military folding rear sight, short 11" hand guard and full length walnut stock. It is the second contract stock with finger grooves. These rifles were inspected by John Jordan, whose name can be found stamped on the chamber. This rifle is fitted with sling eyes; missing one swivel. The buttplate is a replacement; pressed steel, similar to a Mauser. Stock is excellent with the usual dings and a 2" closed crack on top of wrist, while balance is basically a blue-brown patina. Fine action with a strong clean bore. A very early example of a U.S. Navy issued rifle which are extremely desirable and were made in very small numbers.CORRECTION: This is an antique.
