Attributed to the well known Tansel family of horn engravers, probably first quarter of the 19th century. Features a 13 - 1/4" curved horn body with a relief carved "toothed fish mouth" towards the spout. Bulbous wood plug with later brass lanyard ring. Engraved designs are in the typical Tansel style and include a large and detailed patriotic eagle with a shield with arrows in its talons. Detailed borders of scrolls and shaded arches surround the butt and floral and star frames surround detailed animals including two buck, a wolf, a unicorn sea creature and a bear. All animals are folk art interpretations but show great detail. Retains a nice yellow patina overall with some light scratches and areas of light wear. One 1/4" round hole repaired using what appears to be ivory, probably during the period of use. Spout with relief ring now terminates in a cone, which may have been shortened during the period.
