Harper's Ferry manufactured a total of 239,000 of the Model 1816 muskets between 1816 and 1844. This example features a cone-in-barrel alteration to percussion using a round faced hammer. Round smoothbore steel barrel with a bayonet lug mounted on top, near muzzle and traces of markings at breech, tang dated 1838. Lockplate is stamped with eagle over "US" in center and stamped "HARPERS / FERRY / 1837" vertically on the tail. The musket features standard Model 1816 type III steel furniture. Plain full-length walnut stock with stamped V/US vertically behind sideplate, steel ramrod. All steel surfaces retain a spotted and freckled grey patina with heavier corrosion at breech. Lock markings good and plate has some deeper pits. Stock has some scattered marks from use and has a star in a rectangle on left side of forend, near muzzle.
