John Hampton worked in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He is on the 1837 and 1840 tax lists as a gunsmith. Octagonal steel barrel signed "J (star) N (star) Hampton" in script on top flat. Flat percussion lockplate and plain brass furniture. This rifle features a very nice repair on each side of the wrist using a strip of brass retained by four screws on each side. The brass is inlaid flush with the stock. Each side of the forend features four inlaid German silver diamonds and left side of buttstock has an inlaid crescent moon above the cheek piece. The rifle has a full length figured maple stock of familiar Dauphin County form with a relief cheek piece with scallop carved molding. Barrel retains a brown patina with some corrosion at breech. Lock retains a grey patina with some areas of light freckling. Brass is unpolished, trigger guard has a crack behind on back tang. Stock retains much original patina and has a crack at the toe and scattered marks from use. This rifle has outstanding form and the nicest aspect is the early well-done repair around the wrist.
