Probably a trapper's or fur trader's rifle, circa 1840-1850. Browned two-stage rifled steel barrel stamped "P. GONTER" on top flat in block letters. Flat percussion lockplate stamped "DREPPERT" in center. Plain brass furniture, full-length maple stock of familar Lancaster County, Pennsylvania form with faux striping and wooden ramrod. Barrel retains a brown patina with some light wear and scattered marks. Lock retains a dark grey patina with some light freckling and wear. Stock retains much of faux striping and has some marks from use and light wear, a few age cracks extending from wrist into buttstock on both sides. Overall, a very nice and honest rifle with a very attractive stock!
