In the 1800's, up until the late 1950's these cast iron hitching posts were bolted onto concrete around thousands of areas all over the USA and were made to prevent horses from running off. The horses and the posts started becoming a traffic hazard once automobiles were the best mode of transportation. The colonial column features the head of a horse mounted at the top with a rectangular shaped base at the bottom. The horse has holes for two barrings that can be welded on opposite sides of each other. Two pieces are mounted together at the center to form the post, colored in dark green but shows significant wear and patina.
