Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, first half of the 19th century. Octagonal barrel signed on top flat "J Hoak" in script. Scroll engraved lock has been converted to percussion and is unmarked. Brass furniture including an engraved four-piece patchbox and full sideplate. Engraved eight-pointed silver star inlaid above cheeckpiece and silver oval wrist escutcheon inscribed "JB". Full length partially figured maple stock with a replaced hickory ramrod. Jacob Hoak was listed as a freeholder gunsmith between 1809 and 1830 in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County. His name is spelled "Hoke" on tax lists of the time. He also made 68 gun locks for Pennsylvania Committee of Safety contracts. Barrel retains a brown patina with some edge wear and scattered marks, signature shows light wear and some percussion corrosion at breech. Lock retains a brown patina. Brass retains a dark patina, some applied patina on sideplate, sideplate probably replaced. Stock very good, a few minor age cracks and marks from use, some lighter areas on wood around brass from polishing. Overall, a very nice flintlock bench or target rifle.
