Octagonal barrel with engraved block letters "JNo. GONTER", added at a later time. Flat lockplate is unmarked. Brass furniture includes four-piece patchbox with daisy finial and some engraving, including date "1823" on lid. Sideplate with engraved border, silver wrist escutcheon inscribed "JG" and engraved silver eight-point star above cheekpiece. Barrel retained with brass keys and decorated with silver oval barrel key escutcheons on both sides of forend. Features a chevron-decorated nose cap. Full-length stock of partially figured maple and Lancaster form, checkered wrist, and incised carving added in a later period behind cheekpiece. Wooden ramrod. Barrel retains a brown patina, somewhat lighter around markings, some scattered marks and corrosion at breech. Lock has been reconverted to flintlock configuration and retains a translucent brown finish. Brass has been polished ans shows some wear to engraving and scattered marks from use. Stock has been refinished and has some scattered marks and some splintering and slivers missing on right side of forend. A decorative rifle that would look great above a fireplace!
