John Ramsey Shuler lived from 1811 until 1879 and worked in Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania until 1857, when he moved to Bloomfield. Features superposed octagonal steel barrels, both stamped "J.R. SHULER/LIVERPOOL, PA" on top flats and both with centered rear sights and front blade sights. One side is fitted with brass ferrules and a wooden ramrod, the other with a large flat brass rib. When rifle is cocked, breech swivels one direction only. Percussion back action lock is unmarked, features double set triggers. Engraved brass sideplate opposite lock. Brass two-piece patchbox with engraved oval lid. Five German silver inlays, some engraved. Varnished figured maple buttstock of familiar Perry County form. Barrels retain a brown patina with some light scattered marks and strong rifling. Lock retains a patina matching barrels. Stock retains much of original finish with some dark patina and minor scattered marks. Brass furniture retains a mellow patina. This is a very nice and honest swivel breech Kentucky in very good condition.
