This is an early example, manufactured during the first year of production. The Model 1841 was adopted in 1841, but was not manufactured until 1842. Straight diamond section steel double-edged blade, right side of ricasso marked “USN/1842” and opposite side of blade is marked “N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/ MASS”. This was made in 1842, which was the last year that Ames worked in Cabotville before moving to Springfield, Massachusetts. Cast brass hilt, front of guard stamped with rack number "124". Grip with relief scales and eagle on each side on pommel. Blade retains a grey spotted patina with some minor marks and a couple small nicks on edges. Hilt retains a dark mellow patina with scattered marks from use, quillon missing and filed smooth, probably during period of use. A very nice early Ames Naval cutless.
