Circa 1790 Berks County, Pennsylvania. This rifle features an octagonal barrel with brass front sight and centered rear sight. Flat lockplate stamped "W./ASHMORE/WARRANTED". Plain brass furniture including two-piece patchbox with finial often seen on early Reading rifles. Partially figured full-length maple stock of familiar Berks County form, carved molded cheek piece on left side of buttstock. Wooden ramrod. Very good, original condition. Rifle was probably shortened slightly during period of use. Barrel retains a dark brown patina with some corrosion at breech. Lock retains a dark patina and appears to be in original flintlock configuration. Brass retains a mellow patina with some darker areas. Stock very good with a few scattered marks from use, bleached areas around lock, and minor age cracks along forend. A very nice untouched Berks County rifle.
