Samuel Smith was listed as a gunsmith in Barree Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania in 1850. He was among the better late gunsmiths of this region and was known to make many fine silver-mounted rifles, as well. Heavy rifled octagonal steel barrel, signed "S. Smith" in script on top flat. Flat percussion lockplate with stamp-engraved scrolls. Features set triggers, front trigger is a turned post trigger. Engraved brass furniture includes a four-piece patchbox with a pierced heart in the center of the finial, lid engraved with spiraling scrolls. Sideplate engraved with two stylized whales. Silver whales tails on each side of wrist, heart inlaid on top, and engraved Moravian star inlaid above cheek-piece. Full-length figured maple stock of typical Huntingdon County form. Probably shortened slightly during period of use. Barrel and lock retain a dark brown patina with some edge wear and scattered marks, some corrosion at breech. Brass and silver polished and with some scattered minor marks. Stock shows some wear, scattered marks, and age cracks. A few small losses around top of lockplate. This is a very attractive signed rifle by a well-known Huntingdon County maker.
