Jacob Snider, an American from New York, developed this system for the Pattern 1853 Enfield, the most prolific imported percussion rifle used by both the North and South during the US Civil War. In 1864 the British Board of Ordnance adopted the Snider system and it was issued in 1865. The conversion uses a hinged breech block with an internal firing pin, and after 1867, brass casings were used. This effective conversion system prolonged the use of the Pattern 1853 Enfield until 1871 when the Martini System was adopted. This example features a a browned rifled barrel with standard converted breech and lock dated 1864. Standard brass Pattern 1853 furniture and walnut stock. Complete with correct cleaning rod and later leather sling. Very good condition, barrel retains much of thinning original finish, very good bore with some minor spotting. Lock retains a grey patina with some wear, action strong. Markings very good overall. Stock shows some oil staining and scattered marks from use. Overall, a very nice and functional example.
