Octagon barrel with full magazine and factory sling swivels adorn this 1866 Third Model rifle. This example is mounted with XX deluxe, highly figured flame cut crotch walnut. This is also verified of its factory origin by the double X marking on lower tang denoting the grade of deluxe wood. Also factory equipped with what is known as the musket style staff rear sight that is infrequently found on sporting rifles. The 1-1/4" factory installed sling swivels, deluxe wood and unusual rear sight are all indication that this was a special order rifle. After detailed disassembly, serial number on buttplate and the barely legible stock mortis appear to be all matching. The rifle is in very good overall condition with strong traces of original finish on barrel and magazine, more so in protected areas. Gun metal brass frame and buttplate have attained a pleasant mustard yellow patina. Stocks have evidence of having been cleaned at a much earlier period as slight wood loss from sanding in evident and crackature of the highly figured walnut buttstock. Rifle remains in its original .44 Henry caliber having not been modified to the centerfire that was so frequently found. The front blade has gone away at some previous time from the front sight. Traditional Winchester two line barrel address is present on top of barrel. A small chip of wood is missing from forearm of rifle at the forward right hand side and there are numerous small nicks and abrasions, all of which appear to be of the period, are evident on the receiver.
