Colt manufactured about 100,000 of these Model 1861 rifle muskets between 1862 and 1864 for the government and an additional almost 14,000 were fabricated and sold commercially. The design generally represents an 1861, but there are areas, such as the lock, that differ in styling. Round rifled barrel with bayonet lug/front sight mounted on top near muzzle and two leaf rear sight. Left side of breech stamped "NJ". Flat percussion lockplate dated 1863 at tail, stamped "U.S. / COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG.Co / HARTFORD, CT." in center, eagle stamped on bolster. Standard Model 1861 steel furniture. Plain walnut stock stamped on left side "N.J." Complete with replaced steel ramrod. Barrel and all steel components have been cleaned and now retain a grey patina with some scattered areas of pitting, especially at breech, barrel markings partially visible. Refinished stock shows an age crack on both side from center of buttplate, and some scattered marked from use, some minor losses around barrel tang. A very nice New Jersey marked Civil War musket by Colt.
