Manufactured by Springfield between 1869 and 1876 with about 3,422 made. Round rifled steel barrel finished bright, and serial numbered to match blued block marked "1870 / eagle / U.S." Model 1868 type rear sight and smaller steel furniture finished bright with no provisions for sling swivels. Bright lock with casehardened hammer is a Springfield Model 1863 lock with standard markings and dated 1863. Walnut stock with deep "ESA" cartouche for inspector Erskine S. Allin. Excellent overall, 80-90% blued finish remains on block with some thinning and wear. Markings excellent overall. Hammer retains most of bright case colors. Stock very good with some scattered marks from use and excellent cartouche. Action is strong and bore is excellent and shiny.
