A total of about 10,000 Model 1871 rifles and carbines were made by Springfield between 1871 and 1872 on royalty agreement with Remington. This rifle features a bright round rifled steel barrel with front sight/bayonet lug and flip-up 900 yard blued adjustable rear sight. Casehardened falling block locking action with polished block and hammer. The left side is marked "MODEL 1871" and the right side is stamped with the Springfield eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872." Top action tang stamped with Remington Patent and patent dates. Casehardened trigger guard and bright barrel bands and "U.S." stamped buttplate. Complete with cleaning rod. Two-piece walnut stock with deeply struck "ESA" cartouche for inspector Erskine S. Allin. Excellent condition with bright shiny bore with deep rifling, strong action. Polished components are excellent with some scattered light freckles. Action retains almost all of original case coloring with some fading, tangs turned mostly to brown and silver. Markings excellent. Stock excellent with only a few scattered marks and some oil stains down comb.
