Cataloged in 1918 as part of the Emmor K. Adams collection, it is described on page 28, as number 282. The description states that it was carried in the Mexican War by an uncle of Charles Fretz, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, who sold the musket to Adams. It is in very nice, dry "as-found" attic condition. This musket features a round smoothbore steel barrel with bayonet lug mounted on top, near muzzle and breech stamped "LS/US/P" Flat flintlock lockplate with beveled edges and rounded tail section stamped vertically "PHILA/1831". Center of lockplate stamped "US/M.T. WICKHAM", features a brass pan and reinforced cock. Standard type Model 1816 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "US". Plain full-length walnut stock, stamped on left side, behind sideplate with clear "LS" cartouche inspector's cartouche for Luther Sage. Steel ramrod is absent. Barrel and steel components retain a heavy brown patina with some minor corrosion at breech. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration, cock screw is a period replacement, touch hole has been re-bushed. Stock is dry and cartouche excellent, some minor dings and marks from use, edges are sharp. A nice original musket with lots of history!
