This early, mid-19th century display features an unmarked percussion half stock Plains style sporting rifle in .38 caliber with full octagon barrel, pewter forend tip, double set triggers, and decorative brass trigger guard and buttplate. Right side of stock is period decorated with six brass tacks that have been there forever. The wrist wears a typical ancient buffalo hide repair as does the forearm just forward of the action. Rifle is in untouched, as found condition with no finish. Some usual wear, cracks and chips to stock. All metal surfaces are a dark brown patina with some raised metal corrosion. Period original sights. Accompanied/displayed on a period wood saddle lined in sheep skin, exposed wood with a rope cinch with iron rings, leather saddle straps and comes with an ancient leather possibles bag with numerous repairs. This is a stunning mid-19th century Indian rifle complete display that enters the realm of art and history, and is important in the American annals of western culture. A wonderful display worthy of an American Indian museum.
