Damascus barrel transitions from octagon to round through "wedding band". A 3/4" diameter 3" long pintel is attached to the bottom flat for mounting on gunnel or bow of sneak boat. Top flat is engraved "J. D. DOUGAL GUN & RIFLE MANUFACTURER TO H. R. H. THE PRINCE OF WALES. 59 ST. JAMES'S St LONDON". Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proofs and "FIRST SPECIAL". Very large and heavy 6" long x 3-1/2" high Dougal lockfast action has 5-1/2" side lever to cam barrel forward clearing large boss on breechface to open. Action is nicely filed and has Celtic knot work border line engraving. Left side is engraved "By Special Warrant To / H. R. H. The Duke of Edinburgh". Bottom of action is engraved "J. D. Dougal / Patent Lockfast". Top strap is engraved with Dougal's logo, a Prince of Wales plume. Large peninsula back spring lock with non-rebounding round bodied serpentine hammer has geometric border engraving and with makers name. Plain but dense European walnut straight grip buttstock with steel cap pistol grip addition, measures 16" over 6-1/2" steel buttplate. Fancy pattern checkering is at grip. There is no provision for a standard forend, barrel held in place by a specially filed steel strap that attaches with a screw. Good with some restoration. Barrel retains traces of original finish, but is mostly grey patina with overall light frosting. Same can be said for action and lockplate. Lettering re-engraved. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish over many marks and scratches. Bore is good to fine, shiny, with a number of fairly large scattered pits. Action is tight. Lock is excellent. A magnificent high quality waterfowler.
