Manufactured 1864 to 1866. This is one of Remington's earlier production long arms chambered for the metallic cartridge. It is also the last type arm supplied to the Union Government on contract prior to the end of the Civil War. This carbine has the sling swivels mounted on barrel band and buttstock; also has the saddle ring and bar, standard dovetail post front sight, single leaf folding rear sight, blued barrel, case colored action, walnut stocks and metal buttplate. Inspector stamp on left side of stock in rectangle "PB" for Pomeroy Booth, whose inspection marks are seen on a variety of Civil war firearms, a civilian employee of the U.S. Army Ordnance department. Also on left side inspector stamp in oval "CGC" for Charles G. Curtis, a civilian employee from the Ordnance department assigned to inspection of contract arms in the late 1850's and during the Civil War. Left side of frame has inspector mark "D", saddle bar has inspector mark "B", "D" on lower tang. Upper tang has Remington address with November 16th, 1864 patent. Near mint bore. Barrel retains approximately 95% of the original factory blue mixing with homogenous patina that has dulled somewhat. Right side of frame has 70% case colors while left side has 20%, balance patterned out. Walnut stocks are excellent to near mint with raised grain and perfect cartouche stamps. Barrel band is a blue-grey mix. An extremely fine example of a very hard to find late Civil War Martial arm. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection. CORRECTION: Hammer has had firing pin removed.
