Caliber 242 H V Nitro Express, ballisticly similar to the later .243, this cartridge was introduced in 1923 for deer stalking. It never attained a great following. This well appointed rifle has presentation plaque on right side of butt stating "TO THE EARL OF MACDUFF" "Along with a Gold Wristlet Watch from the" "Tenants on the Mar Estate and Well" "Wishers on the Occasion of His" "Twenty-First Birthday. 9th August 1935". This rifle has 24" lightweight sporter barrel with sleeved-on block holding one standing, one folding leaf express sight, as well as sleeved-on sling eye and front ramp with silver bead. ,Top of barrel is engraved "Alex Martin 20 Exchange Square, Glasgow". Breech reinforce is marked "242 H.V." "Martin - Vickers". Right side of barrel is stamped with London nitro proofs. Intermediate length Mauser action has polished bolt with unique turned-down flared butter-knife handle. Flag safety is silver inlaid "S" and "R". Bottom metal has hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. European walnut stock is nicely streaked and has bold tiger stripe figure, and measures 14-1/8" over ribbed horn buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip and forend. Steel grip cap is scroll engraved, and a sling eye matching that on barrel is in recess in toe line. CONDITION: Excellent, as refinished. Bore is excellent. Action smooth. An interesting rifle with deep Scottish rrrrroots. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
