Most likely starting with a World War II bring back Model 98 Mauser military action, this classic American sporter was made with the addition of a barrel sourced from standard weight Model 70 or 54. Rear sight boss retained but slimmed. Dovetail presently holds a Lyman folding leaf sight. A partially sleeved-on sling eye was added. Integral front sight ramp retained, which now holds Lyman ivory bead. Top of barrel is engraved "No 1773 Griffin & Howe Inc. New York." Caliber is engraved at rear. Mauser action has had receiver ring nicely stippled and a commercial trigger with right side of tang safety installed. Action also sports Griffin & Howe side scope base and Lyman 48 receiver sight which presently holds blank slide, sighting slide with its spare aperture are in trap of butt. Bolt body, extractor, and cartridge follower have been engine turned. Bolt has had handle bent low for scope use, knob has been checkered. Original military bottom metal has been retained. Trigger guard slightly thinned. Guard lock screw holes welded up, and front of floorplate checkered. Dense American walnut stock is slightly figured, and features ribbed steel trap buttplate, swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece, horn forend tip, and steel grip cap. Grip and forend are checkered in classic point pattern. Rifle is mounted with Lyman 3-9 variable scope with duplex reticle in Griffin & Howe slide and rings without windage adjustment. Excellent condition. Metal parts retain nearly all of what appears to be their original blue, with the exception of bottom metal, which has most likely been reblued over some light frosting. Stock has new oil finish over some light marks, checkering has not been cleaned up. Bore is excellent. Action is smooth. Scope is excellent, optically clear. Weight with scope: 9 lbs 9 oz. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
