(1896) Tapered round barrel is engraved with caliber on octagonal breech section. A sleeved-on base holds one standing two folding nested leaf rear sight. Silver front bead is in sleeved-on ramp. Top of barrel is engraved with H&H address and field rifle trial information. Case hardened tip down side lever hammer action has serial number stamped on front and engraved on bottom tang. Side lever, top strap, and trigger guard are blued. Hammer is bright polish. Lightly figured European walnut, steel capped, pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over ribbed wood butt. Flat top checkering is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching small forend has friction release. Original makers brown canvas case with leather trim has central brass medallion on top. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and has large paper H&H label in lid. Case contains H&H marked round oil bottle, case straps, consignors notes, and a key. Excellent condition. Barrel retains 95%+ original blue with high edge wear. Action retains approximately 80% original case hardening color, vivid where protected by original lacquer, otherwise fading, silvering and browning from normal wear around bottom and on tangs. Stocks retain nearly all of their original oil finish with open grain and a few light marks. Forend is missing a small chip left side top. Bore is fine with some scattered pitting, mostly shiny. Action is tight. Case is good to fine. Interior cloth somewhat soiled and rubbed. Label is lightly foxed and wrinkled. Weight: 5 lbs 4 oz. Most rook rifles saw extremely hard service or neglect and are seldom found in good condition. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
