This exceptional Model 1816 musket is one of the finest known specimens in existence. Features a brown round smoothbore barrel, left side of breech stamped "P/eagle's head/V" and top stamped "Q/b/30", tang dated 1830. Casehardened flat lockplate with beveled edges and rounded tail section stamped "SPRING/FIELD/1830", center stamped with an eagle and "US". Brass pan, rounded reinforced cock, and all screws with assembly markings. Standard browned Type II Model 1816 steel furniture, buttplate tang stamped "US", sideplate, trigger guard and all bands with clear inspector stamps. Plain walnut stock with two crisp inspector's cartouches on left side, behind sideplate. Stamped "JH/3" for Peter Hagner and "AH" for Asahel Hubbard. Two additional stamps behind trigger guard tang stamped ""EA" and cartouche "JS" for John Stebbins. Complete with correct browned triangular socket bayonet, top of blade marked "JB/US". Original and correct bright steel ramrod. Excellent condition, overall, retaining 95-98% of original brown finish with some thinning in high areas and some minor bayonet wear at muzzle. Edges crisp, markings excellent, and screws show no marring. Original flintlock configuration with crisp mechanism and nearly all of original finishes. Bore with some areas of light surface freckling. Stock excellent with crisp edges and clear cartouches, retains nearly all of original finish with only a few minor storage marks and dents along forend, one small hairline crack forward of front lock tang. Bayonet retains much of original brown finish with some flaking and dark spots of patina. A nearly pristine example! From the Jim Linton Collection.
