Lot 246 is part of the Mackay Service, a 1,250 piece extensive custom-made dinner and dessert table service commissioned by John Mackay at the suggestion of his wife Marie Louise, a well-known American hostess living in Paris. Mackay and other partners owned and operated mines in the Comstock Lode, one of the richest veins of silver ore in America. Silver from this source, sent to Tiffany & Co. in New York in 1877, was used to make this service. The original complete service, including 918 pieces of flatware and 332 others, was finished in 1878. It was then sent to France for the Exposition Universelle in Paris and displayed at the American Pavilion- in fact many pieces have French import marks. The style is a combination of popular design elements in the late 19th century, including Persian and Indian influences- in fact the pattern was originally referred to as "Indian" when in production at Tiffany’s factory. The initials are those of Marie Louise Mackay and the coat of arms is associated with one of her ancestors
