According to the factory letter, this special order Winchester No. 191227 was shipped as a rifle with half octagon barrel, half magazine and plain trigger shipped on September 15th, 1885. It comes with a letter from Pauline Muerrle dated 1997, stating this Winchester was factory engraved by either Conrad or John Ulrich. Features scroll and punch dot engraving with a buffalo head panel on left side and scroll and punch dot on right side and a banner for personal identification (not filled in). Since the engraving is not included in the factory letter, we can only refer to her opinion as we have no record to support it. Regardless, the engraving is impeccable. This handsome rifles features octagon to round barrel, button magazine, what appear to be factory sling eyes but are not mentioned in letter, sporting sights, blued finish and rifle butt. Barrel is a mix of blue-brown patina. Frame is basically grey soft brown patina retaining some blue at top and rear of frame. Case colors have patterned out. Stocks are very good to excellent with some usual chips. Action works like new. Strong rifling with some minor residue. Edges and legends are sharp. An extremely handsome rifle with lovely buffalo head panel scene. Comes with a reproduction sling and proper era hooks.
