Circa 1890 "Jaques & Marcus, New York" private label Swiss pocket watch in a very large nickel-silver case, 79mm diameter. Jeweled movement is unmarked. Case is marked Switzerland, and numbered "626561" in three places, and numbered again with "561" inside of the bezel. Double-sunk silver dial with ornate gold gilt decoration, rose gold filigree hands, and blue Arabic markers. Dial has wonderful toning consistent with age. Geprge B. Jaques and William E. Marcus, son of Herman Marcus, formed their partnership in New York City in the early 1880's. Marcus' father, Herman, left his position at Tiffany & Co. to join his son's firm, and along with William and another son, George Elder Marcus, they bought out Jaques, forming Marcus & Co. in 1892. This timepiece predates that event. Watch is currently running, winding, setting and keeping time properly. There are some light scratches present on the case, and some slight discoloration present on the bow. The crystal is in excellent condition without any damage. Gross weight 331.4 grams. From the Ray Bentley Collection. CORRECTION: Additional photos added.
Condition: (Very Good).
