COGSWELL & HARRISON BOXLOCK DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE, OLD CARTRIDGE MAGAZINE, AMMO AND COMPONENTS.COGSWELL & HARRISONSXS DBL RIFLE28343.450 #2 NEMODERNCal. .450 #2 NE 23-1/2" (per factory records) Shoe lump bbls are fitted with short quarter rib holding three flush folding leaf wide V express rear sight with gold lines marked for 100, 200 and 300 yards, and later fitted Ruger type scope bases. Deeply swamped mid rib is gold inlaid "Cogswell & Harrison Ltd" in gothic script. Front ramp holds white Lyman bead. Tops of bbls are engraved with caliber and C&H New Bond Street address. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 80 grains cordite and 480 grain bullet. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs and are fitted with C&H ejector spring housing. Robust, case hardened, boxlock action features automatic safety, Greener type crossbolt third fastener, and blade type striker bushings. Water table is stamped with SN, "PATENT", and "IRON". Action is engraved with 30% coverage sprays of well cut scroll. "Cogswell & Harrison Ltd" is on each side. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has SN on tang, which extends to steel grip cap. Dense, lightly figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/8" over black leather covered pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend has small inlet metal tip and Deeley release. It is fitted with C&H ejector system trips. Drop at heel: approx 2-5/8", drop at comb: approx 1-7/8". Weight: 13 lbs 5 oz. LOP: 14-5/8". What is possibly orig makers leather case has brass corners, and is lined in blue velvet, with large Cogswell & Harrison paper label in lid. Case contains 3-pc brass and birch cleaning rod with brush, a pair of snap caps, and a pewter oil bottle. Included with rifle is old oak and leather ammo magazine with brass corners, embossed "F. K. Peto." on top. An old Cogswell & Harrison label is in lid. Case contains four 5 round boxes of relatively new Kynoch ammo, 10 solids and 10 softs, three boxes of Woodleigh bullets, two soft, one solid, forty unprimed new brass cases by HDS, plastic box containing 16 primed HDS cases, and four loaded cartridges. Also a set of RBS dies. PROVENANCE: Certificate of origin from C & H, confirming specifications and stating it was made for D. G. Reid who took delivery in May 1906. Larry Baer Estate Collection. CONDITION: Excellent, as completely refurbished, retaining nearly all factory quality finishes on wood and metal, with a few light handling marks. Bores are excellent, with strong sharp rifling throughout, and just a hint of frosting at breech end of right bbl. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Case leather is considerably darkened with many scuffs, especially on edges. Brass corners are relatively new. Renewed interior cloth is excellent. Label is considerably foxed.
