HENRY CLAY 1844 CAMPAIGN BANNER. This campaign banner not only carries the name of Clay's vice presidential running mate "THEO. FRELINGHUYSEN" but also the name of "GENERAL JOS. MARKLE" who was running for Governor of PA in the Whig Party same year Clay represented the Whigs for president. There is a most comical, large vignette of a racoon rolling a ball with the motto "MAKE WAY FOR THE COONS" across the top of banner "HURRA! HURRA! WE THINK WITH REASON, THAT THIS WILL BE A GREAT "COON" SEASON". SIZE: PROVENANCE: From the personal estate collection of John W. Armiger Jr. Heritage Auctions, Lot 47006, May 22, 2010. CONDITION: 19-1/2" X 16" polished cotton banner is overall good; text is light, though totally discernible. There are areas of tearing, cracking and reduction in upper left hand corner which does not affect text. There are odd curved lines with old pinholes from unknown sewing. 49055-24 (2,000-3,000) JS0
