CASED COLT MODEL 1849 POCKET REVOLVER INSCRIBED "H.O. SIMES - 1860". COLT 1849 87908 31 Cal .31, 4" bbl, blue and case color finish with silver plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. Bbl has correct 2-line address with finials. Frame is marked "Colt's Patent" on forward left side. SN matches on bbl, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, lever, wedge, arbor, and cyl. The last 4 digits of SN is written in ink in the backstrap channel of the grip. Cyl has the stagecoach scene with Colt's Patent mark and a small "B" inspector mark next to SN. Trigger guard is of the small round type. Trigger guard has an "X" stamped on the left rear flat and a "V" stamped on the forward left bow. Case is of the factory type with purple felt lining and pine bottom. Case contains a .36 cal mold with "Colt's Patent" marked on the sprucutter. Case also contains a pocket model flask that is embossed with Eagle and shield on both sides. There is no Colt Patent mark on flask. Case also contains a variety of lead and conical bullets in .31 cal, 2 spare nipples, a cap tin without a label and an empty box for combustible envelope cartridges in .31 cal. Case was made for a 5" revolver. Backstrap is inscribed "H.O. Simes 1860", which merits further research. CONDITION: Revolver is in very good to fine condition. Bbl retains 40-50% dull blue finish with some flaking on the lug and around bbl address, very little battering on right side of lug and a sharp bbl address. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Lever retains generous traces of case color. Frame is a dull silver gray patina overall with traces of orig case color. Trigger guard and backstrap retain 90% silver finish with some loss at the heal. Inscription and numbering stampings are all sharp. Hammer is a mottled brown patina. Trigger retains traces of blue. Screws are very good. Cyl is a plumb brown patina with some traces of orig blue and a very sharp and nearly complete cyl scene. Markings are sharp. 5 safety pins are intact, although slightly battered. Grips retain nearly all of the orig varnish finish, with slight high point wear and miniscule handling marks. The toe on each side have small chips missing. Butt is un-battered. Case is good. Lid has a crack near right hinge and is missing the screw escutcheon. Case lining is faded on the lid and partitions and is stained on the interior. Dust lip is broken. Mold is very good with considerable blue finish remaining and a sharp mark. Flask is very good with sharp Eagles and small dents overall. Flask is a dark mustard brown patina. A very well preserved pre-Civil war vintage small guard Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver in an original case. 50164-3 TEP (3,000-5,000)
