FIRST MODEL SECOND TYPE MERWIN HULBERT & COMPANY ARMY REVOLVER WITH FLAP HOLSTER. HOPKINS & ALLEN ARMY 14621 44 WCF Cal. 44 WCF. 7" bbl, full nickel finish, checkered hard rubber grips. Bbl has standard Merwin Hulbert & Company 1-line addressed rolled on top with last patent date of March 6.77. Right side of bbl has "The Hopkins & Allen" mark. Cyl is of the early style with scooped flutes. Hammer is of 2nd type without hump. Bbl release is of 2nd type without detent pin. These revolvers were made for Merwin Hulbert Co. on contract by Hopkins & Allen of Norwich, Conn. U.S.A. This revolver is of the early type with open top frame and square grip strap. Frame is marked "Calibre Winchester 1873". SN is stamped on butt behind lanyard loop. Assembly number 4709 is stamped on inner left frame under grip. Assembly number is also stamped on the rear face of cyl. Assembly number also appears to be stamped on bbl lug but mechanism is jammed and will not open. Holster is of the civilian flap type with fine stitching and a toe plug. Holster is lined with kid leather. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains 95% dull nickel finish with some flaking at left muzzle and right side of bbl lug. There are a few scratches along side of bbl release lever. Frame retains 90%+ orig dull nickel finish with sharp cal mark. SN is sharp. Assembly number is sharp. Hammer retains a generous amount of case color with sharp checkering. Trigger guard also retains a generous amount of case color in protected areas, some roughness on bottom of trigger guard bow. Trigger retains 80% fire blue. Cyl retains 40-50% orig nickel finish, tarnished and stained on one chamber. Bright nickel in scooped flutes. Grips are very good with sharp checkering and no chips. Holster is good with most of the finish flaked off, stitching is intact, loop is intact, toe plug is intact, lining is intact. This is a nice early Merwin Hulbert revolver that need some repair in what appears to be its orig holster. These revolvers were the finest quality with selective ejection and way ahead of their time. 50182-1 TEP (3,000-5,000)
