VERY DESIRABLE 1ST MODEL 1873 SPRINGFIELD CARBINE IN THE CUSTER SERIAL NUMBER RANGE. SPRINGFIELD 1873 CARBINE 35042 45-70 Cal 45-70, 22" bbl, blue and case color finish. Straight grain American stock with saddle ring on left side. Bbl is of the first type with no proof marks at the breech. Rear sight is attached by studs. Bbl band has stacking swivel. Receiver is flat sided. Breech block is of the high arch type and marked "Model 1873" over an Eagle head with crossed arrows below and U.S. SN is stamped on top of bbl breech. Lock has a 3-click tumbler and is marked "U.S. over Springfield over 1873" with an Eagle in front of hammer. Stock is of the thin wrist type. Stock has no provision for cleaning rod in butt. Buttplate is stamped "U.S." on tang with no trap door. This is a very fine example of an un-altered First Model 1873 Springfield Carbine in the Custer SN range. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a silver gray patina with some roughness in front of the stock. Sights are very good. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Breech block is a gray brown patina with some erosion and readable markings. SN is clear and sharp. Lock plate and hammer are a silver brown patina. Hammer has some erosion on the spur. Lock marks are clear. Stock has no visible markings. Stock is well worn with numerous dents and mars, especially at the butt end. Trigger guard is a brown patina with corrosion. Bbl band is a silver brown patina. An opportunity to obtain an un-altered First Model Springfield Carbine from the Custer SN range that has no 1877 upgrades. 49973-481 TEP (2,500-4,500)
