ORIGINAL GERMAN 98K CAPTURED IN VIETNAM AND PRESENTED TO CYRUS R. VANCE.MAUSER98K6843E8MMMODERN; C&RCal. 8mm. Miss-matched yet all orig parts, German WWII rifle manufactured by J.P. Sauer with eagle over 37 (Haenel) proof marks on bbl and receiver band. Receiver band also marked "ce" and "42" with eagle over 359 proof on right side of receiver band, eagle over Swastika firing proof on both bbl and receiver band. It is of interest to note that there is a "X" stamped right above the SN on the receiver band, typically this would indicate a Russian capture piece. Brass plaque handsomely and expertly affixed to right side of buttstock reads, "TO THE HONORABLE CYRUS R VANCE / COMPLIMENTS OF / 1st BRIGADE 101st AIRBORNE DIVISION / WILLARD PEARSON / Brigadier General USA / Commanding / RIFLE MAUSER 98 7.92 MM / CAPTURED 5 Mar 66 BY 1st BN(ABN)3 27th Inf / TUY HOA REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM" No cleaning rod present, keeper retaining screws for floorplate and trigger guard not present with a round headed screw substituted in the forward hole. Cleaning rod, and front sight hood is also absent. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good overall with moderate scattered spots of corrosion on forward quarter of metal parts with somewhat lighter corrosion and pitting to rear of rear sight. Stock has been renumbered on left side to match receiver number. Stock hand guard expertly repaired just to the rear of the forward band. Bore is dark in the grooves with strong rifling. A rifle with a very interesting history, presented to a man who was the Secretary of the Army during the Kennedy administration, Deputy Secretary of Defense during the Johnson administration and Secretary of State during the Carter administration. 50630-4 JWK58 (3,500-5,000)
