RARE G403 EJECTOR W. W. GREENER DOUBLE RIFLE.W.W. GREENERSXS DBL RIFLE G40343463450-400 2-3/8(1895) Cal. 450/400 2-3/8". 26" Dovetailed bbls are fitted with full length flat matted rib holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight with platinum lines and marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Central portion is cut away forming slight front ramp holding silver bead. Unmatted portion of rib is engraved "W. W. Greener. 68 Haymarket London." Tops of bbls are engraved "Sir J. Whitworth's" "Steel". Breech portion of right bbl is engraved ".400 Express". Breeches are engraved with 1-1/4" triangles of well cut scroll. Rear portion of rib is engraved with scroll and two birds. Bbl flats are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs, caliber, and "ENGLAND". Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs, Greener elephant logos, and Whitworth sheaf-of-wheat trademarks. A narrow sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Small sized, scallop-backed, G ejector, boxlock action has nicely scalloped fences, and features typical side safety, crossbolt third fastener, and dbl triggers. Action is engraved with 70% coverage nicely cut shaded scroll surrounding vignettes of game, most being suitable quarry for this rifle. A bear is on left side of action, with wolf or fox (?) toward front. A running stag is on right side of action, with portrait of spaniel toward front. Head and shoulders of another stag is on trigger plate, and a running roe buck is on trigger guard bow. Tang is engraved with SN and grade "403". Nicely marbled, and lightly figured European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over engraved steel buttplate, and features flush horn diamond drop points, rounded pattern borderless checkering at grip, and a sling loop, matching that on bbl, as well as a vacant oval, on toe line. Matching splinter forend with slightly schnabeled horn tip has Deeley release. Drop at heel: approx 2-15/16", drop at comb: approx 1-3/4". Cast: neutral. Weight: 8 lbs. 2 oz. LOP: 14-1/2". CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Bbls retain 70 - 80% of what appears to be orig blue, with some light flecking and marks, thinning from normal hand wear around forend. Action retains 45 - 55% orig case hardening color, fairly strong where protected. Stocks retain over 95% of a glossy varnish finish over some light marks, and with a number of fairly noticeable subsequent marks and scratches. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. A fine, slim, good handling rifle in a caliber suitable for nearly all North American game. 51039-1 MGM241 (18,000-28,000)
