FINE GRIFFIN & HOWE BOLT ACTION RIFLE WITH ENGRAVING AND GOLD INLAY MOST LIKELY BY JOSEPH FUGGER WITH SCOPE. GRIFFIN & HOWE (MAUSER) BOLT RIFLE 1855 30-06 MODERN; C&R (1947) Cal. 30-06. 24-1/2" Round sporter bbl is fitted with sleeved-on sling eye and front ramp holding a gold bead. There is a triangle of well cut scroll behind ramp and matching scroll with oak leaves on swivel band. Top of bbl is engraved "No 1855 Griffin & Howe Inc. New York". Caliber is at left rear. What is most likely a military Model 98 action, is engraved with fine scroll either side of stippled receiver ring, and has been fitted with G&H scope base and Lyman 48 receiver sight which are also nicely engraved. Bolt with damascened body and extractor has had Model 70 type safety installed, and handle bent for low scope, with two checkered panels on round knob. A commercial trigger has been installed. Military bottom metal has had trigger guard bow nicely re-shaped, and lock screw holes welded up. Military type floorplate release has been retained. Magazine with more well cut matching scroll at fore-part has scroll which extends to trigger guard bow, and surrounds well done semi-relief portrait of a white tail deer. Floorplate has more scroll within geometric borders surrounding very well done scene of relief gold inlaid moose in open muskeg background. Very nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut steel capped pistol grip stock measures 13-3/4" over Niedner style checkered steel buttplate with trap, which contains staff for receiver sight. Stock features classic post war G&H styling with swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece, ebony forend tip, and well done point pattern checkering at grip and forend with line borders. An early G&H slide-on base with windage adjustment holds Swarovski Habicht 3-9 X scope with duplex reticle. Drop at heel: approx 2-1/2", drop at comb: approx 1-7/8". Cast: Neutral. Weight with scope: 9 lbs. 6 oz. LOP: 13-3/4". PROVENANCE: Remarkable William Larkin Moore Private Estate Collection of Fine Sporting Arms. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Bbl and action retain nearly all of what appears to be their orig blue; the same can be said for magazine and trigger guard. Floorplate appears to have been re-blued and retains nearly all of that blue over some dimples and marks. Stock retains nearly all of what appears to be orig finish with some light marks, checkering possibly cleaned up, as it is quite bright. Blue on grip cap has a purple hue. Scope is excellent with a few light rubs, optically clear. Bore is excellent, bright sharp and shiny throughout. Action is smooth. 50594-66 MGM156 (7,500-12,500)
