VENETIAN CIRCA 1720 BASKET-HILT SCHIAVONA BROADSWORD.44" overall with 38" double-edged blade with engraved decorations, with double-headed eagle, kings crown and "VIVAT / CAROULUS VI / ROMISCHER / KAYSER" commemorating King Karl VI, (1685-1740). Multi-branched iron basket still retains traces of gold wash in protected areas. Pommel is cast brass "cat's head" with raised relief mustachioed face. The grip is wood covered by cord, spirally wrapped with sharkskin. This is a very fine example of an orig 18th century schiavona with great aesthetics and condition. SIZE: PROVENANCE: Private Lifetime Collection Of Noted Scholar And Authority. CONDITION: Very good-fine overall. Blade is grey, still showing gilted backgrounds of etched decorations. Iron hilt is fairly smooth with patina, light pitting. The quillon is bent inward, but intact. Bronze pommel has hand worn patina with discernible details 51625-7 JS (7,000-10,000)
