FINE 17TH CENTURY AUGSBURG WHEEL LOCK PISTOL, CIRCA 1605, FOR TROOPS OF DIETER VON REITENAU, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG. AUSTRIAN SALZBERG WHEELOCK NSN 9.6MM Cal. 9.6mm. This distinctive pistol was made to arm the personal guard of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dieter von Reitenau, measures 29" overall with half octagon-round 20-1/2" bbl (52cm). Fixed dovetail rear sight, slightly turned down muzzle with two incised rings. Rear of bbl has Augsburg proof and a makers mark of a standing bird similar to Stockel figure 8492, pg 1482. Lock and bbl show no other markings. Stock is decorated extensively with bone inlays of masks, birds, floral and geometric scrimshaw with delicate connecting tendrils. Bone inlays and mounts cover much of surface from butt to nosecap. PROVENANCE: Private Lifetime Collection Of A Noted Scholar And Authority. CONDITION: Good-very good overall. Several crack repairs to stock. Some small pieces of bone inlay are missing, especially in the delicate tendrils. Bone buttplate cap has about a 2" restoration at top.
