15" overall, 3" plug. Right folky inscription of Rattlesnake to left of "EPHRAIN HODGE / FOR FREEDOM / OF OPPRESSION". Another panel beneath in riband reads "NEW HAVEN". Unusual carved through on carved spelt with raised rings, large raised plug with brass swivel for string attachment. There is an Ephraim Hodges whose estate was probated in Connecticut in 1772. This would be the one from Norwich, Connecticut, said to be b. 1693. Records support him marrying Bethia Danforth in 1731, and he moved around a bit, he was in Lebanon, Connecticut, in 1745 and later living in Mansfield, Connecticut. He died 4 March 1772, and the probate papers of 1772 reflect "late of Mansfield deceased." The estate inventory also reflects a "powder horn" in his inventory, which a copy is listed in provenance. This Ephraim also had a son named Ephraim, b. 1740, who was the executor of his father's estate. This could be son's horn, though we could not find any military service for him. The son Ephraim can be found still in Mansfield, Connecticut, in 1790 and 1800. There was also an Ephraim Hodges who served in the Rev War who is credited to Hardwick, Massachusetts.
