EXTREMELY RARE LEFEVER & ELLIS HEAVY TARGET RIFLE.ELLIS AND LEFEVERRIFLE955.50Cal. 50. 30" full oct bbl with round muzzle. Top of bbl marked "LEFEVER & ELLIS. / CANADAIGUA. / N.Y.". SN stamped at breech end of bbl and front of action on top. Back action lock is lightly engraved. Hammer screw appears to be a modern floral pinned replacement. Original peep sight on top tang, plain slab walnut buttstock with typical New York State style full steel buttplate. Ramrod appears to be a replacement as are ferrules. SN also noted at back of trigger guard tang. CONDITION: Very good for this rare early New York state maker. Bbl shows an even brown finish with light handling marks and scratches. Evidence of old front sight which has been moved towards muzzle, is near invisible now. Buttstock is good with several cracks around lock, replaced chips and wood shrinkage near breech, repair at toe, handling marks throughout and retains most of an older professionally restored finish. Action is slightly loose. Mechanics are very good. It is thought that the Ellis & Lefever guns that are serial numbered were made for the New York State Sharpshooters and this is a great example of that rare variation. 51645-7 JSL133 (1,750-2,750)
