CASED PAIR OF RARE NEW JERSEY SAW-HANDLED DUELING/ TARGET PISTOLS BY JOHN N. UTTER OF NEWARK.JOHN UTTERDUELING TARGETNSN55 Smooth boreCASED PAIR W/ACCESSCal. 55 Smooth Bore. 9" Octagon bbls with under ribs, are engraved "NEWARK" on top flats. Bbls are stamped with London nitro proofs and "W. ELLIS" on bottom flats (where hidden). Breech plugs have vented platinum blow-outs. Breech irons have integral rear sights. Bar locks with flat faced serpentine hammers and back sliding safeties are engraved "JOHN N UTTER" (working ca 1840). Locks and other furniture including spurred trigger guards and steel grip caps are nicely scroll engraved. Triggers are set. Dense streaked European walnut saw handled half-stocks have German silver nose caps and checkered flared grips. Ebony ramrods have brass tips and tails. Pistols are housed in newly made walnut case, lined in dark green cloth, which contains some well made modern accessories. CONDITION: Fine, as refinished, retaining new bbl brown and case colored iron work over scattered pitting. Stocks have new french polish finish with some subsequent marks. Mechanically fine.
