MASSIVE AND HISTORIC STERLING PRESENTATION HONOR GOBLET FROM KAISER WILHELM TO BARON VON RICHTHOFEN, APRIL 2, 1918.Measuring 16-1/2" tall x 9" wide, weighing 47 troy ounces, 800 fine silver, goblet top is suspended by two Imperial eagles just over 5" from nose to nose, with wing spans of 5-1/2" each and about 2-1/2" tallwith 6" x 3-1/2" presentation shield which reads "DEM RUHMBOLLEN KAMPFFHEGER / RITTMEIFTER FRIEHERR VON RICHTHOFEN / KOMMANDEUR DES JAGDGEFCHNBADERS NR. 1 / FUR FEME HERBOPPAGENDEN LEIFTUNGEN IM LUFTKAMPF / VON FEINEM DANKBAREN KAIFER UND KOING / / WILHELM F.M. / GROKES HAUPTQUARTIER, DEN 2. UPRIL 1918" The 8-1/2" which roughly translates to: "Our celebrated fighter pilot / Baron von Richthofen / Commander of the Hunter-Fighter Squadron No. 1 / For his celebrated achievements in air combat / From his most appreciated Kaiser and King / Wilhelm / Grand Headquarters April 2 1918". Von Richthofen just had his 80th confirmed kill and he himself would be dead just 19 days later, killed by Allied ground fire. Richthofen was the greatest ace of the WWI fighting for any country. Richthofen went to painting his fighter plane a vibrant red. Eventually, many pilots in his unit began painting their planes in bright colors and the unit became known as the "Flying Circus" in part due to the unit's brightly colored aircraft. He received the Pour le Merite Saxonys Military Order of St. Henry and numerous other awards. This goblet is somewhat reminiscent of honor goblets that were presented to German WWI aces. The honor goblets incorporated a flying eagle in their decoration. This however is much larger than a traditional honor goblet and was a very significant honor at the time it was presented to Richthofen. By the time of its manufacturer, commodities of silver in Germany was extraordinarily low levels and jewelers were unable to get sterling silver so this massive beaker was a great rarity at this point in time. This was one of the prizes of Mr. Bentley's collection that he had for many years. SIZE: PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: Very good overall. Old polish, several small dings in cup opposite presentation and tiny dings and scratches in base. Makers and quality marks are discernible on bottom rim as seen in photos.
