6 INDIAN WAR ERA ENTRENCHING TOOLS AND CAMP KNIVES.This group includes 2 Model 1880 "hunting knives", standard configuration 8-1/2" x 2" blades. These all purpose knives were used for hand to hand combat, camp use and digging trenches. Both varieties are included: 1) iron mounted 1st issue, SN 129, with correct "Varney" patent sheath marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL". 2)brass mounted 2nd issue, SN 903, also "WATERVLIET ARSENAL" marked proper style sheath. 3) Springfield Armory Model 1873 entrenching tool. This earliest manufactured and issued Springfield Armory edged weapon other than a bayonet is rarely found in fine condition. 13-1/2″ overall, blade is 8″ x 3-1/2″. Orig scabbard is leather covered tin with brass trim and iron loop. Matching "US" surcharges are found on scabbard body and turned wood handle. 4) Springfield 1873 trowel bayonet, a scarce blued example with patent marks on socket which still retains wood handle and correct scabbard. 5) Rare 1868 trowel bayonet with patent hinged finger loop. Scabbard patent marked "DECEMBER 1 1863". 6) 1st Type Model 1869 trowel bayonet with finger loop. Scabbard patent marked "1863" and "US". Lot also includes 3 loose scabbards for Spanish American War era Hospital Corps knives, two of which are marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL"; the version without brass belt loop is marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL". SIZE: PROVENANCE: The spectacular collections of Ray Bentley featuring the finest and rarest deluxe antique Winchesters in the world. CONDITION: 1) Very good overall. Blade has staining and light pitting. 2) Fine overall, bright blade. 3) Very good to fine overall with staining. 4) Very good to fine, bright blade, retaining most of its blue to socket. 5) Very good to fine overall. Scabbard marked on 3-line marking on frog. 6) Very good overall. Grey overall with staining, light pitting. Scabbard is sound with scuffing with 2-line markings on frog. Brass tip is missing its retaining pins. Loose scabbards are good to very good overall. 53094-164 JS (3,000-4,000)
