CASED COLT MODEL 1849 REVOLVER WITH LONDON ADDRESS.COLT1849815031W/CASECal. 31. 5" bbl, blue and case color finish, silver-plated grip straps, 1-pc straight grain American walnut grip. Bbl shows 2-line Colt London address rolled on top flat. Left bbl lug shows two British proof marks. Complete SN appears on bbl, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, loading lever, arbor and cyl. Last 3-digits of SN are stamped on wedge. Left side of frame is marked "COLT'S PATENT". Cyl shows a stagecoach scene with Colt's patent mark and SN. Grip was not removed to avoid risk of damage. Cyl also shows British proofs around rear periphery between each chamber. Mahogany case is made in the American style with velvet lining and partitions for a mold, caps, etc., Brass plaque in top. Case contains a combination tool, cleaning rod, cap tin with green label containing five spare nipples. A small black tin for "Finest Steel Needles for Talking Machines" and a bullet mold. Bullet mold is marked "COLT'S PATENT" on sprue cutter. Inside lid of case has a dealer's label for George E. Hinton. In pencil is written "MADE IN THE FIFTIES IN THE LONDON FACTORY VALUABLE IN THIS CONDITION". Bottom of case and inner lip of lid are stamped "A.H.P.". These are the initials of the consignors great-grandfather A. H. Palmer, who was the son of British painter Samuel Palmer. Samuel was the son-in-law of British painter John Linnel. They belonged to a society called The Ancients. Included with this pistol is correspondence dated July 3, 1959 from B. H. Palmer to the Editor of World's Guns Golden State Arms, Inc. requesting an evaluation of this particular Colt revolver. PROVENANCE: B.H. Palmer Collection. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 80% bright blue finish with balance flaked to a blue/grey patina. Markings are sharp. Bore is bright with strong rifling and one stain. Rammer shows considerable case color on the flat. All markings are sharp and clear. Frame retains 90% case color finish overall with sharp markings. Trigger guard and backstrap show most of the silver-plate that has tarnished to a dull grey patina. Cyl shows 80% bright blue with a complete cyl scene and a few light drag marks around the periphery. Cyl safety pins are intact. Grip is fine and shows most of the orig varnish finish with only a few slight handling marks. Mainspring shows almost all of the orig fire blue. Case is very good with some exterior wear and a crack on the lid that was repaired using small nails. Lining and partitions are intact. Bullet mold shows 60% blue finish with no evidence of use. Colt's patent mark is sharp. Combination tool shows considerable blue. Cap tin label is also intact. Cleaning rod is very good; handle shows most of the blue finish. Label is also very good with only some minor stain marks. Mechanics are crisp. An opportunity to purchase a very fine cased example of a Colt London Pocket 49 revolver in a far above average condition. 53043-1 TEP (4,500-6,500)
