RARE AND UNIQUE CONFEDERATE D-GUARD BOWIE WITH UNIQUE CAST GUARD AND IRON WIRE GRIP WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD, JUST FOUND IN NORTH CAROLINA ESTATE.Confederate Bowie knives continue to surprise this cataloger who has probably photographed and examined over 500 over the 20 years. This unique example measures 18-1/4" overall with a 13" double edged blade 1-3/4" wide. The most unique feature of this knife is what appears to be an integral cast hilt crossguard and pommel attached by a screw to the grip which is covered in iron wire. The blade is still extremely sharp like the day it was made; well ground by a good cutler, with canvas lined, sewn leather scabbard with tooling. SIZE: PROVENANCE: Recently from Hickory, North Carolina estate. CONDITION: Very good to fine overall. Blade is grey with staining, rust and pitting, especially near tip. This knife has never been cleaned and no doubt is just out of the attic as the consignor stated. Its orig scabbard is dry, slightly shrunk and unsewn in top showing its canvas core. Tip of scabbard is broken where point slightly protrudes and sewn belt loop is no longer attached. Hilt and wrap have iron patina, similar in color to blade with remnants of spattered old paint. 53114-1 JS (4,000-5,000)
